Playback Features - Listening and Watching Your Recordings

Chapter 9: Playback Features - Listening and Watching Your Recordings

You've successfully recorded meetings, calls, and important moments. Now comes the crucial part: playing them back. Whether you need to review a meeting to catch details you missed, share a specific moment with a colleague, or transcribe an important conversation, understanding SeaMeet's playback features will help you get the most out of your recordings.

This chapter explores everything you can do with the playback interface—from basic controls like play and pause to advanced features like variable speed playback and waveform navigation. By the end, you'll be able to efficiently navigate through recordings of any length and find exactly the moments you need.

The Player Interface Overview

When you select a recording and start playback, the right panel of SeaMeet transforms into the player interface. Think of this as your control center for listening to and watching your recordings.

Basic Playback Controls

Let's start with the fundamental controls that work just like any media player you're familiar with.

The Play Button ⏵

What it does: Starts playing the recording from the current position

Visual states:

  • Triangle pointing right (⏵): Ready to play (currently paused or stopped)
  • Two vertical bars (⏸️): Currently playing (acts as pause button)

How to use:

  1. Select a recording from your library
  2. Click the play button (or press Space bar)
  3. Playback begins from the beginning (or from where you left off)

Keyboard shortcut: Space bar (toggle play/pause)

The Pause Button ⏸️

What it does: Temporarily stops playback while keeping your position

When to use:

  • Need to take notes
  • Someone's talking to you
  • Want to examine something closely
  • Need a quick break

How it works:

  • Playback stops
  • Your position is saved
  • When you click play again, resumes from exact same spot

Keyboard shortcut: Space bar (toggle play/pause)

The Stop Button ⏹️

What it does: Completely stops playback and resets to the beginning

Difference from Pause:

  • Pause: Stops but remembers position (can resume)
  • Stop: Stops and goes back to start (must start over)

When to use:

  • You're done listening
  • Want to start from beginning
  • Switching to a different recording

Keyboard shortcut: Usually not mapped (use pause instead)

Skip Controls ⏮️ ⏭️

Previous/Back (⏮️):

  • Jumps backward by a set amount (usually 5-10 seconds)
  • Useful for: "What did they just say?"

Next/Forward (⏭️):

  • Jumps forward by a set amount
  • Useful for: Skipping introductions, commercials, silence

Keyboard shortcuts:

  • Left Arrow: Skip backward
  • Right Arrow: Skip forward

The Timeline: Your Navigation Tool

The timeline (also called the scrubber or progress bar) is one of the most powerful features for navigating recordings.

What is the Timeline?

The timeline is a visual representation of your entire recording from start to finish. It's like a map of the audio/video journey.

Visual representation:

Start End
│▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░░░░░▓▓▓▓░░░░░░░░░░▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓│
│ ▲ │
│ Playhead (currently here at 2:34) │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────┘

The dark/light pattern:

  • Dark areas (▓): Represent sound/volume (audio) or visual activity (video)
  • Light areas (░): Represent silence, quiet moments, or static video frames

This visual pattern helps you identify:

  • Where conversations happen
  • Silent gaps you might want to skip
  • Loud moments you might want to review

Using the Timeline to Navigate

Click anywhere on the timeline:

  • Instantly jumps to that point in the recording
  • Playhead moves to where you clicked
  • If playing, continues from new position
  • If paused, stays at new position

Drag the playhead:

  1. Click and hold on the playhead (the triangle or line marker)
  2. Drag left or right
  3. Release to jump to that position
  4. Useful for precise positioning

Scrubbing (Advanced):

  • Click and drag on the timeline without using the playhead
  • Some versions show a preview thumbnail as you drag
  • Helps you find specific visual moments in video

Understanding the Playhead

The playhead is the marker that shows exactly where you are in the recording.

Visual indicators:

  • Usually a vertical line
  • Sometimes a triangle pointing down
  • Often highlighted in a different color

Timestamp display: Next to or near the timeline, you'll see something like:

Current Time / Total Duration
TIMESTAMP: 12:34 / 46:07 [🔊]

This means:

  • You're at 12 minutes, 34 seconds
  • The total recording is 45 minutes, 67 seconds

Timeline Best Practices

Finding a specific moment:

  1. Look at the waveform pattern (audio) or visual thumbnails (video)
  2. Identify the approximate area based on the pattern
  3. Click on that section
  4. Use skip buttons to fine-tune
  5. Use play/pause to verify you're at the right spot

Example scenario: You need to find where Sarah discussed the budget. You remember it was about 20 minutes in and there was a lively discussion.

  1. Look at timeline around the 20-minute mark
  2. Find a section with dense waveform (lots of talking)
  3. Click there
  4. Press play to verify
  5. If not right spot, skip forward/backward 5-10 seconds

Waveform Display: Visual Audio Navigation

For audio recordings, SeaMeet displays a waveform—a visual representation of the sound's volume over time.

What is a Waveform?

A waveform shows how loud or quiet the audio is at each moment.

Visual explanation:

Quiet Talking Silence Loud discussion
│ │ │ │
│ ╱╲ │ │ ╱╲╱╲ │
│ ╱ ╲ │ │ ╱ ╲│
│ ╱ ╲ │ ____ │ ╱ │
│ ╱ ╲ │ / \ │ ╱ │
│ ╱ ╲│ / \ │ ╱ │
│╱ ╲│ / \ │╱ │
└─────────────────────────────────────────┘

Reading the waveform:

  • Tall spikes: Loud moments, talking, music, noise
  • Flat lines: Silence, pauses, gaps
  • Medium waves: Normal conversation volume
  • Dense areas: Continuous talking
  • Sparse areas: Occasional words, silence

Using the Waveform to Navigate

Finding conversations:

  • Look for areas with tall, dense wave patterns
  • Click on those areas to jump to talking sections
  • Skip flat/silent areas to save time

Finding specific speakers:

  • Different people often have different volume levels
  • Look for consistent patterns that might indicate one person
  • Jump between different "voices" in the pattern

Skipping silence:

  • Flat lines = silence
  • Click just after a flat line to skip the pause
  • Useful for: Fast-forwarding through breaks

Identifying important moments:

  • Sudden loud spikes might indicate important points
  • Sustained high volume might indicate heated discussions
  • Changes in pattern might indicate topic changes

Waveform Zoom (If Available)

Some versions of SeaMeet allow you to zoom into the waveform for more detail.

How to zoom:

  1. Look for zoom controls (+/- buttons)
  2. Or use scroll wheel on the waveform
  3. Or pinch gesture on touchpads

Why zoom:

  • See more detail in quiet sections
  • Navigate more precisely
  • Identify subtle audio cues

Playback Speed Control

One of SeaMeet's most useful features is the ability to change playback speed. This lets you listen faster or slower without changing the pitch (so voices don't sound like chipmunks or giants).

Available Speed Options

Standard speeds:

  • 0.5x - Half speed (slow motion)
  • 0.75x - Three-quarter speed (slightly slow)
  • 1.0x - Normal speed (default)
  • 1.25x - Slightly fast
  • 1.5x - One and a half speed
  • 2.0x - Double speed

Some versions also support:

  • 0.25x - Very slow (for detailed analysis)
  • 3.0x - Triple speed (very fast)

When to Use Different Speeds

0.5x - 0.75x (Slower):

  • Language learning: Better understand pronunciation
  • Complex technical content: Catch every detail
  • Poor audio quality: Make it easier to understand
  • Transcription: Type while listening

1.0x (Normal):

  • Standard listening: Normal comprehension
  • First-time review: Best for initial listening
  • Sharing with others: What they're expecting

1.25x - 1.5x (Faster):

  • Reviewing familiar content: You already know the basics
  • Long meetings: Get through recordings faster
  • Fast talkers: Some people naturally speak fast
  • Efficient review: When you just need the gist

2.0x (Very Fast):

  • Quick scanning: Find a specific moment
  • Very familiar content: You've listened before
  • Time-critical: Need to review quickly
  • Background listening: While doing other tasks

How to Change Playback Speed

Method 1: Speed Button

  1. Look for a button showing current speed (e.g., "1.0x")
  2. Click it to cycle through speeds
  3. Or click to open a dropdown menu

Method 2: Dropdown Menu

  1. Look for "Speed" or playback settings
  2. Click to open dropdown
  3. Select desired speed

Method 3: Keyboard Shortcuts

  • ] or + : Increase speed
  • [ or - : Decrease speed
  • = : Reset to 1.0x

Speed Adjustment Best Practices

Finding your optimal speed:

  1. Start at 1.0x for any new recording
  2. Increase gradually as you get comfortable
  3. Most people find 1.25x-1.5x is the sweet spot for review
  4. If comprehension drops, slow down
  5. Different content needs different speeds:
    • Technical/Detailed: 1.0x-1.25x
    • General/Review: 1.25x-1.5x
    • Scanning/Familiar: 1.5x-2.0x

Speed and comprehension:

  • 1.0x: 100% comprehension (baseline)
  • 1.25x: ~95% comprehension (minimal loss)
  • 1.5x: ~85% comprehension (acceptable for review)
  • 2.0x: ~70% comprehension (scanning only)

Volume Control

Controlling playback volume is essential for comfortable listening.

The Volume Slider

Location: Usually in the bottom-right of the player Appearance: A speaker icon (🔊) with a slider

How to use:

  1. Click and drag the slider
  2. Left = quieter
  3. Right = louder
  4. Or click at a specific point on the slider

Mute button:

  • Click the speaker icon to toggle mute

  • Click again to unmute

System Volume vs. Player Volume

Two levels of volume control:

1. SeaMeet Player Volume:

  • Controls only this specific playback
  • Independent of other apps
  • Range: 0% to 100%

2. System Volume:

  • Controls all audio on your computer
  • Usually controlled via system tray/taskbar
  • Affects SeaMeet and all other apps

Best practice:

  • Set system volume to comfortable level (60-80%)
  • Use SeaMeet's volume for fine-tuning
  • This gives you most control

Volume Issues and Solutions
