How to record a Webex meeting
TL;DR
Three options: (1) Webex's built-in recording — host or alternate host only, saved to the Webex cloud or your computer, (2) SeaMeet's browser recorder — works for any attendee or guest on any Webex plan, no download, (3) a desktop screen-recorder like OBS. Method 1 is the official route and notifies everyone. Method 2 is the reliable one when you're not the host, and adds a live transcript in 20+ languages.

Which method should you use?
| Question | Method 1 Webex built-in recording | Method 2 SeaMeet browser recorder | Method 3 Desktop screen recorder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Are you the meeting host? | Required — host, alternate host, or granted privilege | Not required — attendees and guests record too | Not required |
| Does your Webex plan include cloud recording? | Often a paid-plan feature; local recording is the fallback | Not required | Not required |
| Need it right now, no install? | Runs inside the Webex app you already have | ✓ Runs in the browser | Requires downloading the recorder first |
| Recording when you're an external guest? | Usually blocked | ✓ Works the same as for hosts | Works — captures your screen |
| Want a transcript afterwards? | Limited — depends on plan and language | ✓ Live transcript in 20+ languages | No — transcribe separately afterwards |
Host / alternate host, desktop app
Method 1 · Webex built-in recording
Webex's native recorder, built into the desktop app and web client. It's the official route when you're running the meeting: one click on the Record button, a choice between cloud storage (your Webex site's Recordings area) and a local file on your computer. The gate is role, not just plan — only the host, an alternate host, or a participant the host has explicitly granted recording privilege to will see the Record button at all. Everyone in the meeting is notified while recording runs.
- 01
Start or join the meeting as the host
Use the Webex desktop app (the recorder is most reliable there) or the web client at web.webex.com. Confirm your audio is connected — recording captures the audio channel you're using.
- 02
Click the Record button in the meeting controls
It's in the control bar at the bottom of the meeting window. If you don't see it, you don't have recording privilege in this meeting — that's the most common cause, not your plan.
- 03
Choose cloud or computer
Cloud recording stores the file on your Webex site (best for sharing and retention, processing takes minutes after the meeting ends). "Record on this computer" saves a local MP4 file — the fallback when cloud recording isn't on your plan.
- 04
Confirm the participant notification
Webex shows a recording indicator to everyone and plays an audio announcement in many configurations. Participants are also told when recording stops.
- 05
Find the recording afterwards
Cloud: sign in to your Webex site → Recordings — play, download, or share the link from there. Local: check your computer's default recordings folder (set in Webex → Settings → Recording).
Method 2 · SeaMeet browser recorder
Method 2 · Record in your browser with SeaMeet
Runs entirely in your browser tab — Chrome, Edge, or Safari on desktop. No signup, no download, no host permission. Free for the first 15 minutes; Sync Pro removes the cap and adds cloud sync. The fastest path for most people.
- 01
Join the Webex meeting in your browser (web.webex.com)
The Webex web client handles voice, video, and screen shares — you don't need the desktop client. Sign in as an attendee or guest.
- 02
Open app.seameet.ai in a second tab
Chrome, Edge, or Safari on desktop. Firefox works with limitations — see the FAQ.
- 03
Record the Webex tab
Pick "A browser tab", select the Webex tab, tick "Share tab audio" — that captures the far-end voices.
- 04
Set the transcription language
Auto-detect covers most cases. Webex calls with cross-timezone teams (US + India, EU + Latin America) work well with auto-detect enabled.
- 05
Start recording
Live transcript streams in the SeaMeet panel. When the meeting ends, recording + transcript + summary land in your library.

Method 3 · Desktop screen recorder
General-purpose screen recorders like OBS Studio (free, cross-platform), QuickTime (macOS), or the Xbox Game Bar (Windows) capture your screen including any Webex meeting running on it. Best if you want full control of the video file or you're already an OBS user. The catch is audio routing: capturing both your microphone and the meeting's far-end audio takes setup on macOS (a virtual audio device like BlackHole), and you get a video file with no transcript — you'd transcribe it separately afterwards.
- 01
Install OBS Studio or use your OS built-in recorder
OBS is free and records any window or screen. QuickTime on macOS: File → New Screen Recording. Windows: Win+G for the Xbox Game Bar.
- 02
Configure audio sources
You need both your mic and the system audio (the other participants). Windows OBS handles this natively via WASAPI; macOS needs a virtual audio device like BlackHole or Loopback.
- 03
Start the recorder, then join the Webex meeting
The recorder is a separate process — Webex doesn't know it's running. There's no in-meeting notification.
- 04
Stop and save the video file
You get an MP4 (or MOV). No transcript, no summary — just the video.
- 05
(Optional) Transcribe the video afterwards
Upload the file to SeaMeet's import flow for a transcript + AI summary, or use any standalone transcription service.
Doing this a lot?
Consider the SeaMeet desktop app for Webex
Detects the call automatically. Works with the desktop app instead of the web client. Local-first recording — nothing uploads during the call.
