How to record a Webex meeting

Method 1 · Webex built-in recording

Webex's native recorder, built into the desktop app and web client. It's the official route when you're running the meeting: one click on the Record button, a choice between cloud storage (your Webex site's Recordings area) and a local file on your computer. The gate is role, not just plan — only the host, an alternate host, or a participant the host has explicitly granted recording privilege to will see the Record button at all. Everyone in the meeting is notified while recording runs.

    Start or join the meeting as the host

    Use the Webex desktop app (the recorder is most reliable there) or the web client at web.webex.com. Confirm your audio is connected — recording captures the audio channel you're using.

    Click the Record button in the meeting controls

    It's in the control bar at the bottom of the meeting window. If you don't see it, you don't have recording privilege in this meeting — that's the most common cause, not your plan.

    Choose cloud or computer

    Cloud recording stores the file on your Webex site (best for sharing and retention, processing takes minutes after the meeting ends). "Record on this computer" saves a local MP4 file — the fallback when cloud recording isn't on your plan.

    Confirm the participant notification

    Webex shows a recording indicator to everyone and plays an audio announcement in many configurations. Participants are also told when recording stops.

    Find the recording afterwards

    Cloud: sign in to your Webex site → Recordings — play, download, or share the link from there. Local: check your computer's default recordings folder (set in Webex → Settings → Recording).

Only one person can record a Webex meeting at a time. If the Record button is missing, either (a) you're not the host or alternate host, (b) the host hasn't granted you privilege, or (c) your site admin disabled recording for the meeting type. Any of those means Method 2 is your realistic option.

Method 3 · Desktop screen recorder

General-purpose screen recorders like OBS Studio (free, cross-platform), QuickTime (macOS), or the Xbox Game Bar (Windows) capture your screen including any Webex meeting running on it. Best if you want full control of the video file or you're already an OBS user. The catch is audio routing: capturing both your microphone and the meeting's far-end audio takes setup on macOS (a virtual audio device like BlackHole), and you get a video file with no transcript — you'd transcribe it separately afterwards.

    Install OBS Studio or use your OS built-in recorder

    OBS is free and records any window or screen. QuickTime on macOS: File → New Screen Recording. Windows: Win+G for the Xbox Game Bar.

    Configure audio sources

    You need both your mic and the system audio (the other participants). Windows OBS handles this natively via WASAPI; macOS needs a virtual audio device like BlackHole or Loopback.

    The recorder is a separate process — Webex doesn't know it's running. There's no in-meeting notification.

Can I record a Webex meeting if I'm not the host? +
Not with Webex's built-in recorder — it's limited to the host, an alternate host, or a participant the host has granted recording privilege to (and only one person records at a time). Method 2 (SeaMeet browser recorder) is the clean option: it captures your own browser tab, so your Webex role doesn't matter. A desktop screen recorder works too.
Does Webex allow screen recording? +
Yes — nothing in Webex blocks another app from capturing your screen. Webex's own recording is role-gated, but OS-level screen recorders and browser tab recorders capture the meeting like any other window. The same consent rules apply: notify participants where your jurisdiction requires it.
When you record a Webex meeting, where does it go? +

Can I record a Webex meeting on my phone? +
Webex's mobile app can record if you have host privilege and your site allows it, but mobile is the most restricted path. The practical fallback: join the call as usual and use the phone's OS screen recorder (Control Center on iOS, the Screen Record quick tile on Android). Upload that video to a transcription service afterwards if you need notes.
Does Webex tell participants when recording starts? +
Yes — built-in recording shows a visible indicator to all participants and, in many configurations, plays an audio announcement. That notification can't be turned off from the recorder side.
